Women's Val d'Isere Speed Weekend Preview

The world's fastest Women will gather in Val d'Isère (France) this week for two speed events, a Downhill and Super-G races are scheduled to take place in the French resort on 18th, and 19th December 2021.

Last winter the speed season officially began in Val D’Isere with a perfect day, compact snow, and a challenging slope.

Corinne Suter won the season-opening race in Val d'Isère.

Suter did an incredible performance, taking big risks but finishing 0.11 ahead of Sofia Goggia who at the same time had taken countless risks to try to beat her.

Breezy Johnson took her first career podium finishing in third place.

The second Downhill race in Val D'Isere was won by Olympic champion Sofia Goggia, who performed a precise, correct race without any sensational risks, but it was absolutely sufficient to take her to victory.

Corinne Suter had to settle for second place this time, 0,24 behind the Italian champion.

American Breezy Johnson despite a small mistake in the final part that made her lose precious speed to win the race, finished again in third place.

Last season Ester Ledecka beats Corinne Suter to take her first win in a Women’s World Cup Super-G race in the World Cup. Her first victory in alpine skiing was during the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang when she stunned the world by winning the gold medal in the Super-G discipline.

Corinne Suter raced to three podiums in three days and finished in second place in the Super-G.

Federica Brignone came 0.35 behind in third, a day after sitting out the Downhill following her crash in Friday’s race.

Sofia Goggia won the first two women's Downhill events of this World Cup season in Lake Louise.

Goggia won each of the last six women's World Cup Downhill events she participated in since a second-place finish in Val d'Isère on 18 December 2020. The last time she missed a place on the podium was in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on 8 February 2020, when she finished in fourth place.

The last woman to win the three first downhills of a World Cup season was Ilka Štuhec in 2016-2017.
