Tignes, an unforgettable experience
Located in the Rhône-Alpes region. France.
Tignes is located in the valley of Tarentaise, in the department of Savoy, in the Rhône-Alpes region, in the southeast of France.
The Tignes ski resort comprises 5 locations; Val Claret, Tignes le Lac, Le Lavachet, Tignes Les Boisses and Tignes-les-Brévières. The first three are very close to each other and are located at 2100 meters. Les Boisses and Les Brevieres are located in the lower part of the valley, above and below respectively the large dam built in 1952 and which buried under its waters the old town of Tignes.
The Tignes ski resort was largely developed during the 1960s and the style of construction reflects the architectural design of the time. In recent years, Tignes has been working to improve the appearance of the new areas with enough success.
The ski area of Tignes - Val d'Isère is one of the most beautiful and largest ski areas in the Alps. 300 kilometers of ski slopes suitable for all levels, from beginners to experts (green, blue, red, black and "Naturide", safe off-piste itineraries not groomed). Tignes - Val d'Isère has a modern network of 78 ski lifts.
The lifts of Tignes have been managed since 1967 by the company STGM (La Société des Téléphériques de la Grande Motte). The company currently belongs to the Compagnie des Alpes. For more than 25 years, the Compagnie des Alpes, a leading company in the leisure industry in Europe, has been operating the largest ski resorts in the French Alps and some of the most important leisure parks in Europe. CDA is the leading European operator of ski resorts, and leader in the ski market worldwide.
The ski domain known as Espace Killy owes its name to Jean-Claude Killy, former Alpine ski runner who dominated the world circuit in the late sixties, winning two World Cup titles in 1967 and 1968. It was also triple Olympic champion, winning the three alpine events at the 1968 Winter Olympics. The Espace Killy extends from the Pisaillas Glaciar over the Col de l'Iseran in Val d'Isère to the Grande Motte glacier above Val Claret in Tignes. The domain has a vertical drop of 1906 meters. Its highest point is found at the top of the Grande Motte cable car at 3456 m. From this point we can descend skiing to the village of Tignes les Brévières at 1550 m.
The glacier area remains open in summer and autumn to practice skiing with 20kms of ski slopes located between 3456 and 3000 meters.
In 2018, after more than 40 years of service, the "Société des Téléphériques de la Grande Motte" is investing in a large-scale improvement plan that will end with the replacement of the Grande Motte cable car with its two cabins of last generation and new traction cable.
Among its objectives, the STGM is working to try to reduce the environmental impact of its activity, for example, eliminating as many pillars from the mountains to ensure that everyone can enjoy skiing for a better experience in connection with nature. The new Toviere gondola lift, a 4th generation lift that replaces the old "Aéroski", has also sought to improve aspects such as comfort and transport speed being more integrated into the landscape in the renovated area of Tignes le Lac, near of the Maison de Tignes, the pool "Lagoon" and the sports and congress center "Tignespace".
But Tignes is also a perfect destination for freeride lovers. 3200 hectares of off-piste skiing where you can leave your tracks on the snow.
During the winter months, Tignes is 100% skiing.
