Corinne Suter Wins in Garmisch Last Downhill Before the Olympics

Corinne Suter shows today in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is in top form just in time for the Olympic Games. She won the last Downhill before the Olympics edging her teammate Jasmine Flury by +0.51 seconds. The world champion had laid the foundation for her fourth World Cup victory and her third in a Downhill with an almost perfect line at the key point in Hell.

It's her second victory in Garmisch. She also won a Super-G in 2020. Suter is the third woman to win a World Cup race in both speed disciplines at the German resort, joining Lindsey Vonn and Tina Weirather.

It's her first win and third podium of the season. She finished in the top eight in 15 of her last 16 World Cup Downhill participations, including eight podiums.

Since the start of the 2018-2019 season, Suter collected a record of 12 Downhill podiums in the women's World Cup.

It’s very important for me because I had a difficult start to the season. And now I’ve found my way and getting better and better. Today I was super happy to ski here and also the feeling was awesome from the first gate”, Suter said.

"I was thinking a lot (...) it was difficult to focus on today's race without letting my thoughts drift ahead to Beijing, but today I try to just ski with my heart and with my head free”, she added.

After Garmisch's race, Corinne Suter is in the second position in the Downhill standings (331), 69 points behind Sofia Goggia (400). Ramona Siebenhofer is third with 278 points. Suter won the Downhill crystal globe in 2019-2020 and finished second in the standings in 2015-2016, and 2020-2021.

Jasmine Flury showed an outstanding performance and took second place - a rumble at the Hölle exit prevented her from having an even better time. For Flury, it is the second podium of her career after her victory in the Super-G in St. Moritz in 2017.

"The second place today means a lot for me, especially because I shared the podium with Corinne. She is a very good friend of mine", said Flury.

Cornelia Hütter third, finished on the podium for the first time this season. She has impressively returned to the Downhill scene after her break due to the coronavirus. She had missed the last two Downhills in Zauchensee and Cortina d'Ampezzo. It's the first time this season she is on the podium. She finally managed to return to the top 3 after her podium in Lake Louise in 2018. It's her 15th podium in the World Cup (10 DH, 5 SG).

Actually, I wanted to drive more controlled. But of course, it's good for me that I showed the old Hutter again and tried to really race. Unfortunately, there were too many mistakes, but the speed is right. It's nice when it lights up green at the finish", said Hütter.

The last 14 women's World Cup Downhill events were won by Italian (8, all Sofia Goggia) or Swiss skiers (6, Lara Gut-Behrami [5] and Corinne Suter [2]), since Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg won in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on 8 February 2020.
