Austria's Cornelia Hütter and Italy's Federica Brignone shared first place in today's Super-G at Garmisch, the last race before the start of the Winter Games in Beijing.
There was no difference between the two after 2,180 meters down the shady and heavily salted Kandahar slope, with the timing system showing both had clock 1:18.19 seconds.
Hütter has impressively returned to the speed scene after her break due to the coronavirus. One day after her return to the podium, she tops it together with Brignone. It's her 16th podium in the World Cup (10 DH, 6 SG). The 29-year-old celebrated her first success since December 2017.
“Yesterday was pretty good, but I didn't drive well at times. Today I wanted to combine the old risk Conny with the new more controlled Conny, and that worked out well. Yeah, it’s really nice. It was a bit weird to cross the finish line and I saw the green light and I saw 0.00. I was really happy to share it with Fede, her skiing was really good. I’m super happy for the day", said Hütter.
For Brignone is her third Super-G win this season, her 19th victory, and 47th podium in the World Cup.
“It wasn't that fast today, but I tried to go too fast. When I crossed the line I realized it was a good run, I am particularly happy to be first with Cornelia. That's very, very good”, said Brignone.
For the Austrian women, it was not only the first win of the season but also the first in a Super-G since that of Nina Ortlieb in La Thuile at the end of February 2020.
Federica Brignone (3), Sofia Goggia (2), and Elena Curtoni (1) won six of the seven Super-G events held this World Cup season. The only non-Italian women to claim a World Cup super-G event this season are Lara Gut-Behrami and now Cornelia Hütter.
Italian women make up the top three in the 2021-2022 World Cup Super-G standings: Federica Brignone (477), Elena Curtoni (374), and Sofia Goggia (332). No country ever swept the women's overall super-G podium.
Tamara Tippler finished in third place +0.82 seconds behind the winning duo. She edged her teammate Mirjam Puchner by a mere hundredth of a second.
She finished on nine World Cup Super-G podiums (including two in Garmisch-Partenkirchen) but never won. This is currently the women's record for most podium finishes without ever winning in this discipline. Tippler finished second in Cortina d'Ampezzo last week and was able to look forward to her second podium finish in a row and the tenth of her career.
With the end of the Garmisch weekend, the World Cup is going into a four-week break. The Olympic Games will start in Beijing next week. At the end of February, the World Cup returns in Crans-Montana with 2 Downhill races.
