Courchevel Giant Slalom Races Preview

Ladies return to competition in Courchevel (France) with two Giant Slalom Races on 21-22 December 2021. For the 10th time, a race will be hosted in the Émile-Allais Stadium, located in Courchevel 1850 on the Loze sector.

The program in Courchevel will be the following:

Giant Slalom, Tuesday, December 21st. 1st run 10:00; 2nd run 13:00 (CET)

Giant Slalom, Wednesday, December 22nd. 1st run 10:00; 2nd run 13:00 (CET)

Last winter Marta Bassino won the second Giant Slalom of the season with a back-to-back victory, demonstrating she was then the most consistent racer in the discipline.

The Italian racer finished 0.46 ahead of hard-charging Sara Hector, and 0.59 clear of Petra Vlhova.

Bluebird skies, a compact and icy surface, and a difficult course were the ingredients of the second Courchevel Giant Slalom where Mikaela Shiffrin returned to the top of the podium.

Federica Brignone made a huge mistake and almost fell, but with the determination that distinguished her, she added an extra gear and crossed the finish line 0.82s behind Shiffrin.

Tessa Worley skied an excellent second run and finished 1.09s behind the American.

Mikaela Shiffrin won this season's opening World Cup event, the giant slalom in Sölden. Shiffrin also won the slalom event in Killington on 28 November, bringing her total tally up to 71 wins, ranking her in third place all-time behind Ingemar Stenmark (86) and Lindsey Vonn (82).

No skier has claimed as many World Cup victories in Courchevel as Shiffrin (5). Shiffrin won three of the seven women's World Cup Giant Slalom events held in Courchevel.

Shiffrin can become the third woman in the last nine World Cup seasons to win the opening two Giant Slalom events, after Viktoria Rebensburg (2017-2018) and Marta Bassino (2020-2021).

Marta Bassino has won the Giant Slalom Crystal Globe last season. She was the only woman to win more than one World Cup Giant Slalom event in the 2020-2021 season. She claimed her victories in Sölden, Courchevel and Kranjska Gora (2). She failed to finish the first run in the season opener in Sölden.

Petra Vlhová finished in third place in the season opener in Sölden. The Slovakian has collected five World Cup wins in the Giant Slalom.

Federica Brignone has claimed seven World Cup race victories in the Giant Slalom, including one in Courchevel (2019. Following her win in the Super-G in St. Moritz on 12 December, Brignone (17) broke the Italian record for most wins in the women's World Cup, set by Deborah Compagnoni (16).

Tessa Worley shares third place on the all-time women's list for most World Cup Giant Slalom wins with Anita Wachter, Tina Maze, Viktoria Rebensburg and Lise-Marie Morerod (all 14). Vreni Schneider (20) and Annemarie Moser-Pröll (16) make up the top-two.

Worley claimed four World Cup podiums in Courchevel (one second and three third places), second-most behind Shiffrin (5, all wins). Worley has yet to win a World Cup event on French snow.

Ragnhild Mowinckel was the last Norwegian woman to win a World Cup giant slalom event, in Ofterschwang on 9 March 2018.

Three big names will be absent in Courchevel after testing positive in COVID-19: Lara Gut-Behrami, Alice Robinson, and Katharina Liensberger.
