71 victories, 46 in Slalom in the World Cup, and 5 victories in Killington for Mikaela Shiffrin. She remains the slalom queen of Killington. The US local hero has won every Slalom event held in the Killington Superstar racecourse. She is now tied with Ingemar Stenmark (46 in Giant slalom) in the number of wins in a single discipline in the World Cup.
“My mentality was super aggressive on the second run. That’s really how I need to be for both runs. At my top speed, this run, I don’t know if I can ski faster slalom than that, (...) Every single race is an enormous test, and it’s very nerve-racking as well”, said Shiffrin.
Born in Vail, Colorado, Shiffrin considers also Killington as her hometown as she is a former student of the nearby Burke Mountain Academy.
"It means, even more, to do it in the second run and it's special to win these races here. I could hear the crowd at the start of this run and that was amazing", added Shiffrin.
Petra Vlhova built a slim lead (+0.20) over Mikaela Shiffrin in the first run but finished in second place (+0.75) after making a huge mistake in the upper section of the course in the second run.
“It could have been worse than second place. If you take a lot of risks, something like this can happen today. Hopefully next year”, said the Slovak, who is still waiting for success in Killington.
She finished runner-up to Shiffrin in the last four slalom events contested in Killington. She claimed fifth place in the first Killington slalom held, in 2016.
Wendy Holdener rounded out the podium finishing in third position (+ 0.83). She has collected 28 World Cup podiums in the Slalom but has yet to claim her first victory. This is currently the record for most World Cup podiums in a single discipline without winning.
Austria's Katharina Liensberger was fourth today with Germany's Lena Duerr continuing her fine start to the season and finishing in the fifth position.
On a tricky second run set by Vlhova's assistant coach Matej Gemza, Sweden’s Hanna Aronsson Elfman skied an impressive second run. The 18-year-old skier was blisteringly fast - only Shiffrin was faster - enough to move up to 15th place.
