Schladming is a small former mining town in the northwest of the Austrian state of Styria.
The ski resort named Planai is the main mountain in the Schladming area. It is one of four adjoining mountains, which includes Hauser Kaibling, Hochwurzen, and Reiteralm, connected under the name Schladminger 4-Berge-Schaukel a ski area of 123 km of beautifully prepared pistes.
The Schladming-Dachstein World Championship Region has held various skiing competitions, including most notably the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1982 and the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2013.
Schladming-Dachstein is part of the Ski Amadé ski domain, a network of 28 ski areas and towns that combined, make up the second-largest ski area in Europe. With only one lift pass you can ski on 760 kilometers of slopes served 270 modern lifts, spread out throughout the top five ski regions of Salzburger Sportwelt, Schladming-Dachstein (including the Dachstein Glacier at 2,700 m), Gastein, Hochkönig, and Grossarltal.
Every year on the Tuesday after Kitzbühel, Schladming stages his traditional Night Slalom.
The Night Race in Schladming is a unique experience.
Last season in an Exciting race in Schladming Austrian Marco Schwarz claimed his second career World Cup slalom victory. He finished ahead of the French duo of Clement Noel and Alexis Pinturault.
Clément Noël is one of three Frenchmen to have won at least nine Slalom events in the World Cup, alongside Jean Noël Augert (13) and Patrick Russel (9).
Noël has achieved all 16 of his World Cup Slalom podiums since the start of 2019. In this same period, no other male skier claimed more than nine Slalom podiums in the World Cup.
The only Frenchman to win the Slalom event in Schladming was Jean-Baptiste Grange on 25 January 2011, exactly 11 years ago.
Henrik Kristoffersen claimed four World Cup Slalom wins in Schladming (2014, 2016, 2017, 2020), sharing the record with Benjamin Raich (4). The Men's record for most World Cup Slalom event wins at a single resort is five, set by Ingemar Stenmark (Kitzbühel, Madonna di Campiglio), Alberto Tomba (Sestriere) and Marcel Hirscher (Zagreb, Adelboden).
Kristoffersen has won 19 World Cup slalom events, ranking him fourth on the men's list behind Ingemar Stenmark (40), Alberto Tomba (35), and Marcel Hirscher (32).
Sebastian Foss Solevåg won the World Cup Slalom race held in Madonna di Campiglio on 22 December. It was the Norwegian's third world-level victory in the slalom, after a World Cup win in Flachau on 17 January 2021 and the gold medal at the World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo on 21 February 2021.
Kristoffer Jakobsen is the only man to claim multiple slalom podiums this World Cup season. The Swede finished second in Val d'Isère and third in Madonna di Campiglio, his first career World Cup podiums.
Jakobsen can become the first Swedish man to win a World Cup slalom event since André Myhrer in Aspen on 19 March 2017.
Manuel Feller won the final slalom event of the 2020-2021 World Cup season, in Lenzerheide on 21 March. He finished on the podium in Slalom eight times. The Austrian won two Slalom events in the World Cup. This season he finished second in Adelboden and fifth in the last Salom in Wengen.
Marco Schwarz, the winner of last season's Slalom Crystal Globe, finished 11th in Adelboden and 10th in Wengen after failing to post a result in the opening two Slalom events of this season.
The last man to win the Schladming event in back-to-back editions was his compatriot Marcel Hirscher in 2018-2019. Austrian skiers have won 14 of the 27 men's World Cup slalom events in Schladming.
Alexis Pinturault finished second in the Slalom event in Madonna di Campiglio, his 12th World Cup podium in this discipline. The Frenchman won three Slalom events in the World Cup.
He finished on the podium in each of the last three slalom events held in Schladming but has yet to win.
Last Saturday Dave Ryding wins the Slalom in Kitzbühel. It's his 3rd podium in Slalom (he was 2nd in Kitzbühel in 2017, and 3rd in Adelboden in 2021), 4th in total including a second place in the City Event in Oslo in 2019. Ryding becomes the first British Skier to Win a World Cup Race.
Lucas Braathen is leading the World Cup standings in the slalom, after his win in Wengen and his second place in Kitzbühel. These are his only World Cup podium finishes in Slalom.
Daniel Yule has claimed more podium finishes in Schladming (3, all third places) in World Cup Slalom events than in any other resort.
This season there have been five different winners in five races and the 15 podium places have been divided by 13 different athletes (only multiple podiums by Kristoffer Jakobsen and Lucas Braathen).
