Women's Val d'Isere Speed Weekend Preview

The world's fastest Women will gather in Val d'Isère (France) this week for two speed events, a Downhill and Super-G races are scheduled to take place in the French resort on 18th, and 19th December 2021.

Last winter the speed season officially began in Val D’Isere with a perfect day, compact snow, and a challenging slope.

Corinne Suter won the season-opening race in Val d'Isère.

Suter did an incredible performance, taking big risks but finishing 0.11 ahead of Sofia Goggia who at the same time had taken countless risks to try to beat her.

Breezy Johnson took her first career podium finishing in third place.

The second Downhill race in Val D'Isere was won by Olympic champion Sofia Goggia, who performed a precise, correct race without any sensational risks, but it was absolutely sufficient to take her to victory.

Corinne Suter had to settle for second place this time, 0,24 behind the Italian champion.

American Breezy Johnson despite a small mistake in the final part that made her lose precious speed to win the race, finished again in third place.

Last season Ester Ledecka beats Corinne Suter to take her first win in a Women’s World Cup Super-G race in the World Cup. Her first victory in alpine skiing was during the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang when she stunned the world by winning the gold medal in the Super-G discipline.

Corinne Suter raced to three podiums in three days and finished in second place in the Super-G.

Federica Brignone came 0.35 behind in third, a day after sitting out the Downhill following her crash in Friday’s race.

Sofia Goggia won the first two women's Downhill events of this World Cup season in Lake Louise.

Goggia won each of the last six women's World Cup Downhill events she participated in since a second-place finish in Val d'Isère on 18 December 2020. The last time she missed a place on the podium was in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on 8 February 2020, when she finished in fourth place.

The last woman to win the three first downhills of a World Cup season was Ilka Štuhec in 2016-2017.

Goggia has won 14 career World Cup events (all disciplines). The only three women representing Italy to have won more are Federica Brignone (17), Deborah Compagnoni (16), and Isolde Kostner (15). She is hoping to become the first woman to win the overall downhill World Cup in successive seasons since Lindsey Vonn in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.

Sofia Goggia leads the women's Super-G World Cup standings. She won the opening Super-G race of this World Cup campaign in Lake Louise and finished second and sixth in the two events held in St. Moritz last weekend.

Lara Gut-Behrami claimed 11 of her 33 World Cup wins in the Downhill, including two in Val d'Isère. The only women to win more World Cup Downhill events in the French town are Lindsey Vonn (4), Annemarie Moser-Pröll (3), and Marie-Theres Nadig (3).

Gut-Behrami won the first Super-G in St. Moritz last weekend to claim her first World Cup victory of the season. She was second in the Opening Super-G in Lake Louise.

She crashed in the second Super-G event in St. Moritz. The DNF last Sunday ended Gut-Behrami's run of seven successive top-two finishes in Super-G.  Gut-Behrami has won 17 World Cup Super-G events.

Lara Gut-Behrami has won three Super-G crystal globes (2013-2014, 2015-2016, and 2020-2021). The only three women to have won the Super-G standings on more occasions are Lindsey Vonn (5), Katja Seizinger (5), and Carole Merle (4). She can become the first woman to win the super-G crystal globe in successive seasons since Tina Weirather in 2016-2017, and 2017-2018.

Corinne Suter is the last woman to beat Sofia Goggia in a World Cup Downhill event when she won in Val d'Isère in 2020 just 0.11 seconds ahead of the Italian.

Suter reached the podium in three of the last four women's World Cup Downhill races, with the only exception in this run a fifth-place finish in the opening event of this season in Lake Louise.

Corinne Suter won the Downhill crystal globe in 2019-2020 and finished second in the standings in 2015-2016, and 2020-2021.

Breezy Johnson finished second behind Sofia Goggia in both of the opening two women's downhill events of this World Cup season in Lake Louise. She finished in third place in each of the opening four Downhill events of the 2020-2021 World Cup.

Federica Brignone won the last World Cup Super-G event, in St. Moritz last Sunday. No Italian woman ever won successive Super-G races in the World Cup.  Brignone's super-G win in St. Moritz was her 17 World Cup victory in all disciplines, surpassing Deborah Compagnoni (16) for most among Italian women.

Mikaela Shiffrin claimed a top-three finish in four of her last five World Cup Super-G appearances. The only exception in this run was sixth place in the opening Super-G race in Lake Louise.  Shiffrin's last Super-G win in the World Cup was on 26 January 2020 in Bansko.

Tamara Tippler finished on seven World Cup Super-G podiums but never won. This is currently the women's record for most podium places without ever winning in this discipline.  At the age of 30 years, Tippler can become the oldest Austrian woman to claim her first super-G victory in the World Cup. Nicole Schmidhofer was 29 years days old when she claimed her maiden World Cup Super-G win, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on 26 January 2019.
